SIGN OF THE TIMES
Welcome Valentine’s Day with
a high-flying banner—it looks
beautiful hung over the
mantel or near the entryway
of your home. To make your
own, cut out long rectangular
shapes from fabric—you
should be able to fold each
piece in half to hang. (Cut out
a triangle shape at each end
to create a dual-prong flag
design like ours.) Then print,
stamp, or use fabric paint for
the lettering. When dry, fold
each flag in half and run a
string through the set. Glue
or use a sewing machine to
stitch down the flags with
the string inside.
HEART TO ART
Grab a
needle, thread, and your
collection of colorful scrap
fabric to create display-worthy
modern art.
- To make this kid-friendly
collage, cut out repeating
shapes from fabric—we liked
the sweet combo of lovebirds
and hearts. Use spray adhesive
to mount, then frame.
- To make the stitched canvas
(best for more advanced
crafters), pencil a design on
store-bought canvas, then sew
over your drawing using a
thick needle. We used a
backstitch technique; check

SOFT SPOT
Dress up a
plain pillow by adding the
word “love” with stencils and
fabric paint. Cut out your own
letters, or buy a set of stencils
at your local craft store—also
a good source for an
unadorned throw pillow.
